Newspaper Garbage Bin Liners

Newspaper Bin Liner Collage

For almost 4 years, we went without newspapers. Flipboard & Feedly were the primary source of daily news (link to an older post YES to News, NO to Paper). Business news from Business Standard, global news from BBC, local news from Deccan Herald, editorial & opinions from The Hindu — it was the best of many worlds. And there were no stacks old newspaper to take care of.

Then came the diktat from our housing society that only newspapers are to be used to line the wet garbage bins. There was no way out of this, but to start buying newspapers again.

The local delivery boy defaulted to The Times Of India. Unfortunately nothing had changed with this publication over the years. It was as trashy. Focus on sensationalism rather than news. It has its pluses, but the negatives far outweigh. Even though we started it for the garbage bins, where the ToI rightly belonged, it seemed so wrong that we were contributing to its circulation. We changed over to The Hindu.

The Hindu has been a revelation. It has positively changed over the years. More pictures, but in moderation. More importantly, pictures are relevant to the news. Without worries, we let the kids read it. It even runs Calvin & Hobbes.

It does as good a job as any with lining the bins too. It has helped that I’ve discovered a cool way of making bin liners with newspapers from The Alternative.

If you are interested in design & like playing designer to create original content, Canva is a site you should check out. The technology on the site democratizes design & paves the way for anyone to let their creative juices flowing. The site makes it easy for wannabe designers by making available many inspiring examples, it provides you the infrastructure & tools to get going easily, and it also has professionally designed elements that you could buy as building blocks for creating your own content. Fittingly, my first attempt at the site was with Seth Godin’s wisdom.

Cambria, CA along Highway 1

If you are doing a road trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco, plan to do it over over 2-3 days. That is exactly what we did earlier this summer & we were rewarded with a gorgeous experience of the US west coast.

“There’s a sunrise and a sunset every single day,
  and they’re absolutely free.
Don’t miss so many of them.”
  – Jo Walton

We experienced this beautiful sunset in Cambria, a sea-side village mid-way between the two metropolises. Walking to this spot, we also witnessed a couple of passing whales & it made for a perfect culmination to a beautiful coastal day. The fact that this hand-held shot was taken almost 45mins after sunset is testament to the low light prowess of the Canon 6D. The shooting star effect of the jet plane was the icing on the cake.

Dakshina Chitra, East Coast Road, Chennai

We chanced upon Dakshina Chitra on a recent trip to Chennai. It was a fantastic discovery. The place is an attempt to show case South India’s culture, heritage & architecture in a compact & presentable format. Informative & fun, Dakshina Chitra is enjoyed by kids & adults alike.

This particular shot is of a painter’s work bench, which was really a newspaper spread on the ground with all the color bowls on it. Made for a colorful shot.
